I've got a bit of a weakness for Camaros. It must have something to do with my HotWheels collection, but I've always wanted one. Generally, cars have been about function in my life, but the Camaro remains the only vehicle that I want because of the way it looks.

Of course, I'd never buy one. Unless...maybe...they made a hybrid version. Well, it looks like that maybe is getting a little more likely.

GM has had to take a long look at its vehicle line in order to determine how exactly they'll be able to meet the new mileage standards for their fleet. Already they've canceled a multi-hundred-million-dollar plan to re-tool their V8 engines. And now they're cutting muscle cars left and right. But the Camaro, it seems, will be spared. But it's also possible that they'll deal with the mileage problem in these muscle cars by pushing Dual-Mode hybrid versions.

The Dual-Mode hybrid is GMs way of increasing mileage of low-mileage vehicles. Already the system has been shown to increase city mileage of powerful vehicles by over 50%.

Of course, this would make the Camaro extremely expensive...just one more reason why, despite my desire, I probably won't be getting one for myself. But if they make a 2009 Hybrid Camaro HotWheel...I'll be all over that.

I too have a bit of a soft spot for this car. I blame my father and his 1979 gold Camaro. i would love to see someone drop a diesel engine in one and run it on vegoil!

I must blame my Father for my love for that car as well. He had a 69 R/T that was modified as a street legal Dragster. I will say the replacement fiberglass front end he put on that car really helped to make the car lighter and faster and could have helped with the gas mileage if it wasn't such a beast of a race car. yep a sweet car for sure, I'd take mine like my dads, deep orange with black racing stripes, But only if it has a tire smoking electric drive with a small gas engine to recharge the batteries.

The guy that wrote the orginal article is just trying to get everyone stired up by saying that the Camaro will be priced way higher than the competition. This is not true and he has no fact backing this up. He has no facts about a hybrid either. He is just guessing, but really has no clue. IMO
"the car connection" was just trying to get some publicity out of this.

This is about as "green" as a bio-diesel hummer! If chevy's current efforts are anything to go by (2MPG improvement in the hybrid malibu, vs. the regular model), then we can fully expect this baby to get around 22 MPG - WOW!

A Little Though Experiment

Now, as we all know, electric cars have full torque at zero RPM. So electric cars can beat a gasoline care in acceleration. The main problem can come at high speeds.

Now, lets assume that the Volt takes off and Chevy/GM use it to work out most of the bugs in an electric car.

Hypothesis: It would not be unreasonable to assume an electric muscle car could be on the market in the next 10 years with a 400hp (~300kw) engine. Oh yes, lets also add that it could be 4-wheel drive for faster acceleration and a higher top speed.

Anyone care to take a stab at what the top speed could be?

While this car might not be very green, it sure is a step in the right direction. Personally I love sporty cars, and that is one of the main reasons I won't buy a hybrid in the near future. If there was a way to buy the car I love and still have less of an impact on the environment, I would definitely consider it.

Not everyone wants a 'green' car. This is America, people. There will always be a fascination and love affair with the automobile. I am not opposed to a hybrid camaro. What i really want to do is drop a 454 big block in a Prius and drive that around.
