Chevy: GM's Green Brand?

I just saw a Chevrolet commercial touting all their alternative energy and fuel efficient vehicles. It featured the Volt that we've heard so much about, a new Malibu hybrid, ethanol and concept hydrogen vehicles. This goes beyond the Volt commercials I've seen before and makes a statement that they are more than just one green car. Honestly, the commercial shows off quite a lineup, and their Fuel Solutions website makes a compelling argument that they are really trying to change.

I'm still not completely convinced, since the only worthy green news is the Volt. But by putting themselves out there as being greener and officially putting the Volt in their plans, they are risking a lot if they fail to deliver. If you go to the Ford website, the environment barely even makes the homepage (it's under "Innovation"). I guess comparing it to GM's site, Chevrolet's parent company, Ford is doing well, but I don't see any of Ford's brands positioning themselves in such a green way. In fact, going over the websites of other manufacturers (Honda, Toyota, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes-Benz), I would say only Chevy is actively trying to re-brand itself as green.

Chevy still is known for (and heavily reliant on) their trucks. But even so, it looks like they're aiming for a greener future.

Good to hear

I was looking at the Silverado Hybrid a few years back and the mileage was worse than my Tacoma PreRunner (18 vs. 21mpg). I'm not much into the e85 either, but I'll take a look.

You misspelled "crappy"
written by Matt Fischer, October 14, 2007
I think you meant to say "crappy" and not "green". My first car was a Chevy, my second was a Chrysler, and with that, I drove my last "American" brand car. Besides, GM is one of the main forces fighting against higher CAFE standards, so any green info on it's website is just marketing BS.

I was disappointed
written by Driver B, October 15, 2007
When I first saw one of these ads I was pretty excited. . .until I read the fine print. It's a little disappointing to me that they are flaunting all these products that are not available to the market any time soon. I'm glad being green is now important enough to be on their radar, but I want to see it put into practice!

Chevy Tahoe Hybrid and Saturn Aura Hybrid will be available next month. Saturn Vue Hybrid is now available. Chevy Malibu Hybrid will be available end of this year.

Yukon & Tahoe Hybrids will have better fuel economy that the Toyota Camry and are coming this fall. Not marketing BS - but GM living up to its commitment for fuel efficient / alternative energy vehicles.

Matt Fischer should get the crap out of his eyes and read sometime. The holy Toyota is just as much against increases in CAFE as any other maker that sells here. When GM has reasserted supremacy as the worlds auto maker, maybe he'll cease following the hate America crowd he obviously belongs to

sorry matt fischer, but you need to get a dose of reality. read the news and you will see that not only is precious toyota fighting against CAFE, but their quality reputation is crashing through the floor. chevy is making the move to expand their already expansive lineup of vehicle to include hybrids and alternative energy, way to go for them!

For years, GM has had offered the most efficient vehicles in the market. It is not the fault of the manufacturer that consumers choose to purchase vehicles with different abilities - a manufacturer should offer as many vehicle types as possible. Of course, some of GMs most efficient cars were ugly ... take a look now. WOW! They are nice. “Relying” is not the word to use, in my opinion, selling the most trucks because people need them to complete a job is compliment – the 4Runner is not a truck and should get 30 MPG but does not, why? Vehicles offered, not vehicles sold should be the standard. If this was true GM’s CAFE would be the best out of any manufacturer. I also think one should look at death rates and not insurance rates to determine the safety of a vehicle. GM gets yelled at for having heavy vehicles and to improve efficiency has tried to drop the weight of many vehicles but has kept or added many safety features which are heavy in weight. The consumer has to make a decision and the manufactures should not force one to choose between function, safety, efficiency, and price. In my opinion, GM has done a good job at managing these expectations. Finally, look at the total pollution of a vehicle. Internal combustion engines burning fuel are going to have pollutants; many manufactures fought the catalytic converter but not GM. We could move to EGR values and so on to modern vehicles. The problem is few gases are regulated as emissions. Review total pollution not simply a few gases that are easily manipulated. Stand behind some manufactures vehicles and just breathe, you will know who is good for the environment. And that is just the engine. What about pollution from tires. Several manufactures suggest changing the tire every 20,000 miles, what is this doing for the environment. Several manufactures have a low mile fluid changing rate, what is this doing to the environment. Only GM has an oil life monitor, saving more oil than any hybrid. Several manufactures are already warranting the batteries of hybrids and not recycling them, what does that do for the environment? Have you every had to clean your windshield on the inside, do you know what it is? Which manufactures have the most leaching from plastics? Have you every swept a one foot square on a major road and then set on fire the dust you just collected? Which manufactures are still using such heavy metals in parts? I know the environmental movement needed to start some place, but a continued focus on visible pollution is missing the point.

Billy Shith Please Stay in China
written by Honest American, October 16, 2007
Billy Bob, The Japanese manufacturers are not telling the truth and the media doesn't even get the picture! All writers including Billy need to weed out the trash they are writing about. Become an educated writer not a sensationalist. Everyone really gets on the poor quality kick GM, Ford and Chrsyler had 20 yrs ago. No one remembers the rusted FRAMES Honda had. The Catastrophic engine failures Toyota had and are having again. GM has more technology put to mpg savings and hybid development than any other manufacturer. It is time the media quit dwelling on the past and see what is right in front of them, American quality, American integrity and American honesty. The Japaneses are lying to the consumer on the MPG, horsepower, quality and recalls and most Americans are really believing them. Our Country and economy need to have writers and reporters print the truth and spend more time revealing the lies the off shore companies are feeding naive Americans. I know Billy will go to China and find under development and society indifferences and be glad to be back in the USA. We really don't want you unless you are proud to help and write the truth of the American Pride and Heritage. Be a part of Change not the Problem!! Believe in yourself, buy your own Products, Buy American!!

Why buy a small Honda Accord 4 cyl when you can buy a roomier Chev or Ford v-6 and get the same MPG!!

i think the perception that foreign is better than domestic has to do with trust and PR. so toyota was better quality wise back then. now almost two decades later people still believe it even if it isn't true. the public is slow to change their outdated beliefs.

also, domestic took a backseat to hybrids. either they didn't think it was going to take off (dumb) or they set a slow timeline for development (also dumb). consumers see these actions or inactions by domestic makers as behind the times.

Toyota Slips in Many Ways
written by Honest American, October 18, 2007
TOYOTA SLIPS IN ‘CONSUMER REPORTS’ SURVEY . . . While some hot new GM products like the GMC Acadia and Saturn OUTLOOK have been added to the “recommended” list in the recent Consumer Reports’ reliability survey, and Buick became the first domestic brand to reach the top ten list, the news wasn’t so good for a key GM competitor. Toyota has slipped in the survey to the point where the magazine will no longer automatically recommend the automaker's new and redesigned models. In fact, Toyota saw the V-6 version of the Camry and the four-wheel-drive V-8 version of the Tundra pickup truck, both redesigned for 2007, rate below average. The all-wheel-drive version of the Lexus GS sedan, from Toyota's luxury brand, also received a below-average rating.

The survey results are the latest blow to Toyota, which has been stealing market share from U.S. automakers but is dealing with recent challenges. It has posted year-over-year sales declines in recent months and has seen some of its top talent, including its top U.S. executive, defect to U.S. automakers.

Where is the Hydrogen Fuel Cell
written by mdc, November 16, 2007
A few years ago GM came out with a Silverado 4x4 that was powered by Hydrogen Fuel Cells. Well, where is this truck at ? With Hydrogen there is no oil or gas used...so that tells me that the car companies and oil companies are in bed together and I probably won't see this technology out on the streets in my lifetime. We can put a space station to orbit the earth, put a man on the moon and even send probes to Mars, but we can not have a car or truck that runs on nothing but oil and gas...yeah right....

I am not going to act like I know anything about "green vehicles", but I would like to share a thought. I am sure everyone is aware of the condition of the economy in this country! I think the idea of finding a better, cleaner fuel source is something that everyone will agree upon. I would like for everyone to think about what would happen to the economy in this country if we all purchased cars that were made by companies (General Motors, Ford, Dodge) that employ thousands of people right here in the United States. Think about the impact of that single purchase, that would trickle down to so many other companies that supply these automobile manufacturers. In my opinion if you want to have a better life for yourself and future generations to come, invest in american made products and help yourself

Diesels are green
written by James D, November 16, 2007
Hybrids aren't as green as they are marketed to be. What is going to happen to the lithium batteries in these vehicles after they die? Are they recycleable? I bet that the amount of exhaust you save from Hybrid cars wouldn't add up to the amount of pollution that is caused in the refining process from diesel to gasoline if we had the same number of diesel cars(mine gets 45mpg)on the road. Just something more to think about.

I'm all for hybrid vehicles, but what about the consumer such as myself that can't afford to purchase a hybrid vehicle... Why not make them more affordable, the purpose of these vehicles are to save the enviroment right???

The All New Chevy Malibu!
written by Dale Duplantier, November 17, 2007
It's about time GM gets serious on style and design.
The 2008 Malibu looks fabulous. It could be the other bench mark for midsized automobiles, formally held by Toyota and Honda. Based on what could be GM's future, I think the future for GM and the American automobile is promising. If I could afford it, I would buy a Chevy any day. ;D

Buy American to keep jobs here! Yeah ri
written by kos, November 17, 2007
I'm sick of the "buy American" to keep jobs and families in vehicle talk. If you did not know, Most of the Japanese cars you buy ARE made here in America which employs and pays benefits for Americans and their American families while some of the American made models are made in Mexico and elsewhere outside the U.S. with foreign made parts. American brands are also outsourcing jobs also to be able to compete. Just something to think about. Have a nice day and I'm now headed to the garage to get in my American made Honda.

American built Honda?
written by Torch, November 17, 2007
American built Honda? C'mon, do you honestly think your Honda was built with American parts, made here in America by Americans? No, it was assembled in America with foreign parts by American workers. Do you ever hear about the foreigners complaining that their company is outsourcing to the US and employing US workers to put together their product? Just something to think about. Have a nice day and I'm now headed to the garage to get in my Mexican made Chevy to run over your American assembled Honda.
