According to a company press release, it looks as though the Fisker luxury plug-in hybrid will be introduced at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show in January 2008. Reports also indicate that the Fisker Automotive vehicle will be available to buyers in 2009.
Fisker Automotive will offer a range of environmentally friendly premium cars – with the first production car to make its Worldwide North American debut at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show in January. Initial production is anticipated to be 15,000 vehicles annually with pricing to start under $100,000.
While the $100,000 puts it out of the reach of most of us, it still shows that the plug-in hybrids are coming, and are coming from several different directions.
Benefits in developing an entirely new, from-the-ground-up design for a plug-in hybrid vehicle include optimized fuel efficiency and performance, unchanged gas station infrastructure, home based battery recharging with any 110-volt outlet at a fraction of the cost. A cleaner and a quieter car for local travel... all with the most advanced comforts that are anticipated with a luxury car.
It will be interesting to see how a startup company such as this fares versus existing hybrids like the Toyota Prius or forthcoming plug-in hybrids from major automakers like the Chevy Volt. Will the current Prius-owning crowd move toward the more luxury models like the Fisker? Or will the lower-cost Volt become the next flagship environmentally responsible vehicle? As these vehicles start to come to market, we'll continue to watch and see how they develop.
