Kevin Grandia, who we are proud to be well acquainted with through working together in the ecoblogosphere, has just been through a bit of a saga.
Curious about the Heartland Institute's list of "500 Prominent Scientists" who deny global warming, Kevin decided to contact some of the folks on the list. He put together a list of 150 email addresses...simply the addresses he found it most easy to acquire. After only 24 hours, he'd received 45 emails from angry scientists saying that they, in no way, denied anthropogenic global warming.
It turns out that the heartland institute had never told the scientists they were going on the list, nor did they check to see if these people actually had any doubts about the causes of climate change. Just a sampling of quotes from emails Kevin received:
I am horrified to find my name on such a list. I have spent the last 20 years arguing the opposite.
I have NO doubts ..the recent changes in global climate ARE man-induced. I insist that you immediately remove my name from this list since I did not give you permission to put it there.
Please remove my name. What [they] have done is totally unethical!!
The Heartland Institute has been publicizing their list for years, and not a single journalist took the time to check the names on the list. The Heartland Institute has now distanced itself from the list, and withdrawn its claim that they are supported by 500 prominent global warming skeptic scientists. But they have yet to apologize. Over 400 of those scientists are real deniers. Your article reflects a disregard for mathemetics common in the warmist crowd, saying that the whole list is fake because 10% of it is.

Are they scientists? The doofus who reads the weather feed on your local TV station is a scientist?
And did you read the part about only 150 of the 500 being contacted? 45 out of 150 would suggest that 1/3rd of the people listed do not agree with being included on the list.
And that's only the 45 that happened to get back to the email within 24 hours. I'd guess some hadn't checked their email or thought the list so silly that they didn't bother replying.
Your assumption that 400 listed are in agreement is deeply flawed.
And do you have even an inkling of the vast numbers of scientists that think global climate change is happening right now?

Avery and Singer's list isn't a list of deniers, though the Heartland Institute loves to claim it as such. It is a list of scientists who have found physical evidence of a natural climate cycle that occurs roughly every 1,500 years. Because Avery and Singer want to attribute modern warming to this cycle, they assume that all of these scientists would do the same. Obviously this is not the case.
And the problem with attributing modern warming to this 1,500 cycle? It's about 600 years off schedule.

Heartland Institute seems to be very interested in pushing back against smoking laws and receives a lot of funding from Exxon.
Denying global warming would seem to be a sideline for them.
Too bad organizations can't be sued for spreading FUD via lies.

One of the barometers of global warming is the melting of the polar icecaps. When I was in Alaska last year we went to Glacier Bay. I also bought a map that showed the receding of the glaciers by year. You can also see this map at:http://glacier-bay.gsfc.nasa.gov/maps/south.gif.
By far the vast majority of the receding of the glaciers was from 1780 to 1880, long before there would be enough manmade pollutants to cause the receding glaciers.
And, after 1966 the glaciers actually started expanding.
Global warming? most likely "Yes"
Manmade? Arguable.

the more i've learned about global warming as an ecology student, the more I think it should be called climate change instead. Although the general trend is warming, we should be more worried about the increases in EXTREME weather patterns that can disrupt life on this planet. Hurricane seasons are only going to get worse, as well as powerful winter storms, and periods of drought.
Oh, and climate change is most definitely a result of the enormous, undeniable impact humans have had on the planet.
