Just a few years ago, 52 inch televisions didn't exist. Now, thanks to dozens of innovations, they're almost boring, and not even that expensive. Oddly enough, they're more efficient than the old CRT televisions...per square inch. The bad news is, as we've been exponentially increasing the square-footage of our televisions, so have we been exponentially increasing their energy use.
California, struggling to meet green power mandates while energy use has been steadily on the rise, is looking to tackle the problem at the source. By 2011, legislators are hoping that all but the most efficient televisions will be unavailable in California.
This might, in fact, completely eliminate plasma TVs from the market, as LCD televisions have been making more progress in efficiency than plasma. Of course, this wouldn't stop Californians from driving to Nevada, or ordering their televisions online.
Of course, the legislation could also have the opposite effect, forcing manufacturers to create more efficient sets for the (extremely large) California market, but also selling those sets everywhere. Less efficient sets would have a smaller market, and so be more quickly phased out.
If enacted, the first round of regulations would go into effect in 2011, decreasing user's electricity bills by about $20 per year. The second tier would come into effect in 2013, lowering bills by an additional $10.
I've seen what manufacturers can do to lower the power use of their sets, and I'm entirely confident that this can be done without a dramatic increase in the price of the units. And, really, if you want your entire living room wall to be a television screen...you should be willing to pay a few extra dollars for it.

I would prefer to add a tax to make it hard for those plasma sets to compete in the market, along with a graduated tax on electricity use rather than an outright ban.
But I also don't think that socialism is inherently evil. Socialism doesn't have to be in the Soviet model. Most European countries, for example, are socialist in some degree and there are a lot of great places to live, work, profit, thrive. Socialism simply advocates community ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc. But it doesn't necessarily require the federal government to have that control or that the government controls every type of capital or land or whatever. Some government control can be better for the people.

Health insurance, border defense, air traffic control, education, childcare, fresh food production -- should these be for-profit corporate activities or nonprofit activities operated for the benefit of the people? But to say "we can't do that because it's socialism" means that we aren't discussing the merits but just name-calling. Maybe we're missing some benefits by not considering some government control.

Socialist countries have just the same lack of information that plagues the market. Actually Socialist economies use less information and "councils" and use many fewer people to make decisions. The market aggregates alot of information from alot of people and throws it into a nice package called price. When Socialist councils and committees get together they aggregate alot less information alot slower from fewer people. What plagues both systems is the simple fact that we cannot predict the future. Anything can happen.
"fresh food production" makes me laugh,... the government has its hands ALL UP IN the US food and dairy industry. For farms they PAY farmers not to produce. In the case of dairy they gets produced regardless, the US buys up the surplus.
Although you can argue that this is a good thing since it produces large ag surpluses that can be used to help other nations in times of famine. Although others would argue that the large US surplus causes famines since other nations develop one crop for export since any normal ag goods that the US can produce the US produces in abundance.
Cali Government is doing the stupid thing. Intervention (as in price ceilings in the power industry and pollution controls and siding with NIMBYism) causes even more intervention (passing laws preventing people from buying TVs) which will cause more intervention (police to enforce the laws preventing TVs from being imported or turned on) which now infringes your natural rights.

Steveo the "wise" asks what politicians have created. I'm presuming he is wise enough to know that socialism does not mean turning over creativity to politicians, and that he is simply creating a strawman to burn. Even in the relatively laissez-faire US, government grants and subsidies contribute massively to research, agriculture, transportation, etc.
But substitute "government" for "politicians", and big, wise Steveo might notice that the original article and his response are circulated via the internet, an invention of DARPA, a wing of the big government he so despises.

Oops, sarcasm.
I'm all for saving the planet and not killing ourselves by killing our ecosystem and whatnot, but I think the power of the individual and the power of the free market will do that if there is a market for it. Which there is, fortunately. Surely you've noticed how big business has begun marketing "green". Why? Because their customers want it. Supply and demand.
As for socialism and the federal government, I believe that their success record is enough to make anyone who is not an absolute dreamer realize that virtually nothing should be handled by The State.
Yes, DARPA made the internet. But DARPA is so atypical to normal government that it's an unfair comparison. It's really just a bunch of brainiacs who are encouraged to think up the unthinkable, and they do so. So let's keep DARPA, and ditch the rest.

Ah, we went to the moon on the Gubment's dime.
As for socialized medicine, I don't see any 'socialized' countries clamoring to return to the US's way. Just because conservatives say it's failing doesn't make it a fact. Just like when conservatives say tax cuts pay for themselves. Or human activity can't change the climate. Conservatives say the magic market can police themselves. Obviously, they can't. Business only cares about the bottom line...as they should. I say let the people, through their representative government, decide upon the rules.

Here is a statement that interest me:

The word "have" refers to the past. I don't believe this "exponential" growth refers to the future. Are the legislators expecting TV screen sizes to keep growing until they are 160 feet wide and 90 feet long? I don't think so. It seems more likely to me that the growth in screen size is over.
However, I must admit that I'm thrilled by "decreasing user's electricity bills by about $20 per year." You gotta admit that's a big selling point.
Whatever this TV change becomes it cannot be a big deal on $20 per year. Look at your electric bill. How much electricity in KwH will $20 save? How much does $20 decrease pollution? The $20 per year will decrease pollution by ten gallons of gasoline per year. How many gallons of gasoline do you use in a year? I don't know what $20 converts to for electric cars, but I'd like to know.
Saving energy is like living on a budget. The money goes for a whole lot of little things. Where did my money go? Where did my energy consumption go? Tvs are another one of those many things. If you want to save energy then turn yours off.
By the way, "not even that expensive" does not apply to my budget. I'm waiting for the price to come down. I want to consume that big TV energy. I wonder if there are a lot of poor "me's" out here?

I too wait for the big tv! $20 per month is nothing compared to spending $1000+ fpr a tv! as for the socialist comments, this IS another way for the gov't to put in their 2 cents. Socialism DOES NOT work! I would hat to need a medical procedure and then told I am too old,fat,stupid, or whatever excuse could be come up with. Obama is going run this country in the hole and prolong this recession thru 2015!!! Just watch and see.....

Based on reality, i.e., the current state of affairs in America, capitalism is not only not perfect but it is totally broken. Who broke it? Greedy corporate robber barons.
Being the wise one, you must know taht the only place where capitalism is working is in Communist China, which as you surely know was co-created by the Chinese government and American big business who out-sourced nearly all of the basic manufacturing capabilities of America. You know, the ones who make your TVs (and probably everything else you own), and your crayons, too.
Whether you like it or not, America is a colony of China. If you don't believe me, just take off every piece of clothing you have on and you will see the naked truth of what I am saying. Not a pretty sight. Next, throw out everything in your house made in China and you will learn what it is like to be homeless. Oh yeah, I forgot, your house has been foreclosed by your less than perfect capitalist free market goons.
Isn't it ironic that your other favorite president, Ike Eisenhower, was the one who warned us about the military industrial complex? Or was it Ronny Reagan (your favorite) who whined about the evil empire? But then again, the poor sap was suffering from Alzheimer's disease: he just forgot who was paying his bills.

Everybody has to have their lottery winnings, only now they want their overnight lottery in the form of a "safe" investment. The people let them get away with it because it pads their pocket books. But then reality comes to roost and it crashes down and "the people" have the gall to blame "wall street." The "people" need to get back to the idea you have to work for your fortune (which can only be done in a free capitalist society,) and realize "there is no such thing as a free lunch." "The people" let former President Clinton get away with lying to the American public under oath, because they thought their pocket books were benefiting under his lies and deceit. But now that "the people" showed the world they will tolerate lies and cheating (especially if it appears to benefit financially,) why should they be surprised that is what they are getting. And as usual, the lies and cheating all comes crashing down as it can only maintain its mirage for a short period of time.

Our founders must be spinning in their graves as this country continues to fix the problems caused by too much government with more government. I never got you people who who have nothing but contempt for business and free markets but infinite trust in government. I guess it's because of the stellar work they have done with social security, welfare, warfare and their most recent work in the mortgage industry (for example mandating that mortgage companies count welfare and unemployment as forms of income). Yet the same schmucks who are responsible, people like Barney Frank, try to put the blame on capitalism and continue to get re-elected by fools like the ones in the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts. Speaking of Barney, he sounds like his vocal chords have been damaged, hmmmm I wonder how? Some of you people should read the words of our founders and see how they warned us about just what is happening. Thomas Jefferson said " It has been my experience that most bad government is the result of too much government". You are right Steveo, don't let the Kool-aid drinkers get you down brother.

The size of your TV is inversely proportional to the capacity at which your brain operates. Do not buy a bigger TV. Do not buy a better TV. Do not buy a TV. Go outside. Enjoy the sounds of birds chirping. Listen to what they say. Chirp back. Capitalism and socialism following current models fail on the most basic level to provide for its constituents. Both result in the degradation of the landbase one which all people, including you, rely. Food does not come from a grocery store and electricity does not come from a wall outlet. Wake up. Think about it a little harder. Stop getting your information from moving pictures broadcast directly into your hearts by the powerful with only the interest of their pocketbooks concerned. Stop watching TV and start doing something. Anything. For your own sake.

Thank you wrong discussion! We got rid of our tv last year and it is the best thing we ever did. We now spend our time reading, talking, playing games, sewing, gardening, and *gasp* actually interacting with each other in a thoughtful way! Our lives are much better with no tv at all! We do not miss it.

Who are you to tell me I can't have a nice 50 inch TV? You are nobody, that's what. You have no right to take away my right to buy a TV, nor tax me more for choosing a better screen. I'm already paying MORE for the bigger screens as it is.
You people, I can't believe how much you WORSHIP primitive technology. It's time to move into the FUTURE, not the past. LCD TV's and even Plasma TV's are the current evolution of the TV. Stop embracing the past, and look toward the future. I'm so tired of you eco freaks trying to reverse human progress. And yes, TV's count as progress. Nobody wants to go back to the days of 20 inch CRT's that take up the whole room and have a crappy picture. (I owned several tube sets and they DON'T compare to the new HD tv's).

There are new plasma TVs out there that require less power consumption than a lot of LCDs. Plasma is still slightly superior to LCD regarding video quality. Who are they to take that away and say we can't purchase the best video for TV?
I get the power consumption issue. Then they should ban all large (power sucking) toys. What about electric hybrids vehicles. Can't do those either when they're ready?

I don't want to start a political debate, but when you can't buy a TV from a local BestBuythere is just something that says it is wrong( in my mind).
