The City of Bilbao's metro service has announced that the transportation system was powered completely by renewable sources last year, making it the first metro system in the world to do so.
The subway was provided the renewable energy by local utility Naturgas. The announcement stated that the metro prevented the release of 46,000 metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere last year by cutting out dirty energy, the equivalent of taking 8,000 cars off the road.
In addition to this great accomplishment, the subway cars themselves were made more efficient by introducing a new brake energy recovery system that reduces energy consumption by 33 percent.

I'm curious what sort of renewable energy was provided by a company called "Naturgas".

I'm not sure the claim of being the first is correct. In the province of Quebec in Canada electricity is mostly coming from huge hydro facilities in the north of the province. Perhaps not the best environmental alternative but it is a renewable energy source. The metro in Montreal goes back to the 1960's

Here in Norway we have nearly all renewable energy. And we´ve had it for 100 years. So I guess you can say our trains have run on clean energy for ages, then how come Spain is the first?

Calgary's LRT system is run by wind power as well. Not sure that Bilbao is the first metro system to accomplish the feat, but it is commendable nonetheless.

Naturgas means natural gas and since it doesn't say what renewable energy was used I suspect it wasn't renewable at all, but antural gas. Ofcourse that may produce less CO2 than what they used before but it's certainly not green.

I also have some suspicions about the "renewable" energy coming from Naturgas. If, however, they ARE powering their transit system with truly renewable energy, AWESOME! I hope to hear about more cities following suit.
