Porsche has unveiled an electric version of its iconic Boxster sports car called the Boxster E -- the first of three that will be built. The prototype has 240 horsepower provided by two electric motors attached to the front and rear axles, can go from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and should have a 100-mile range per charge. All of the electric drivetrain technology was provided by parent-company Volkswagen.
The German carmaker will test the three Boxster E prototypes around the Stuttgart region and use them as "mobile laboratories" to test and improve electric car technology for future Porsche models.
Last year, Porsche said it would make a hybrid version of all its models and so far has debuted a 911 GTC R Hybrid race car, a 918 Spyder hybrid, and a hybrid Cayenne SUV, but the Boxster E is its first all-electric vehicle. While there are no immediate plans for a production model, I don't think it will be too long before we see it.
