Volvo V60 is All-Electric, Plug-In Hybrid and Diesel Vehicle All in One

Having trouble deciding between an all-electric, plug-in hybrid or diesel vehicle?  Well, Volvo says you can have all three -- in one car.

The new Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid sports wagon can change between those modes by just the push of a button and a driver can experience all three modes during a single trip.

Switching the car into Pure mode makes it an all-electric vehicle.  The 70-horsepower electric motor drives the rear wheels, and the lithium-ion battery pack provides a 30-mile range per charge.  Each full charge takes about three hours.  The Hybrid mode offers a 125 mpg equivalent and a 745-mile range.  When you want to maximize performance, switching into Power mode lets you go 0-62 in 6.9 seconds, while sacrificing some efficiency.

In case a driver has trouble deciding which mode to use, the car has navigation technology that automatically recommends the best mode choices for each trip.

It's currently just a concept that will debut at the Geneva Auto Show, but Volvo says it could be at dealerships in Europe by 2012.  Those lucky Europeans.

Nice features... this piques my interest enough to do some more research on this model. I could use the extra payload a wagon/crossover offers, and still get those kind of energy efficiencies.

I like the idea but lets think about this for a moment. If Volvo had an engine that would get 135 mpg they would put it in everything they make. With only enough Batteries for a 30 mile trip even with regeneration the motor is doing over 90% of the work especially on a trip of over 700 miles. Don't get me wrong I like the idea and it is a step in the correct direction. But the fact that anyone would put the 135 mpg figure in writing is kind of sad.

Isn't this just a plug in electric with a selectable power mode? Kind of like making a big deal about manual transmission when most cars have automatic. Don't get me wrong, I still by manual because I like it better. And being able to say, hey I'm doing a short drive so just use the electric is great. But looks like mostly a marketing play.

Range Extender - the best choice

In my eyes, electric cars with a small range extender would be the best coice at the moment. In this way you can reduce the range anxiety as well as driving most of the ways full electric.
The hybrid is also a good decision, however two full fledged systems which is negative in terms of the total weight.
