The Eco-Marathon has been going on for a long time in Europe, but now, this ecogeeky tradition has been brought to the states. The Eco-Marathon of the Americas is, so far, a more humble undertaking, with colleges from around the country contributing fairly simple cars. But the results have been pretty spectacular.
Basically a few college students have created couple dozen cars that have up to 1000 times better fuel efficiency than mass produced car in the world. While they aren't fast, or comfortable, the winning team from California's Polytechnic Institute managed to get over 1900 miles per gallon, beating it's nearest rival by several hundred miles per gallon.
The Eco-Marathon is sponsored by an oil company, Shell, and we're not sure how we feel about that, but we figure since they wrote the $10,000 check to the winning team, we should at least mention them.

100 times better fuel efficiency.
Even American cars do better than 2mpg
1900mpg is pretty amazing though and a very futuristic looking car.

Dang, of all the off-the-wall shapes and sizes I've seen for alternative vehicles, from the Zap car to the Honda Element to the Tesla, this one is the most amazing. Reminds me of a mosquito larva or some pupal form of caterpillar, only noir.
