Thin Film Solar...WTF is it? While more tradtional solar cells still dominate the market, a handful of new photovoltaic technologies are making their presence known, and will soon be huge contributors to the market.
If solar power can get cheap enough, investors know that the potential market is in the trillions of dollars. Harnessing the power of the sun could absolutely solve many of the environmental problems our world faces. The question is...will it ever be cheap enough. And while silicon solar cells require fairly thick slabs of expensive crstaline silicon, thin film solar has long promised to decrease prices while keeping efficiency relatively level.
The industry is growing extremely quickly. And many forms of thin film solar are already cost competitive with silicon solar. Thin film applications are less well understood, so they have more opportunity for increases in efficiency and decreases in cost. It is very likely that thin film manufacturing will continue to grow quickly throughout the next decade and, by 2020, be a large segment of new energy infrastructure for individuals, commercial projects and even utility scale projects.
The opportunity growth is outstanding. Check out this PDF summary report from GreenTechMedia and the Promethius Institute if you'd like to learn more about the future of thin film solar.
