The gulf-coast is experiencing a man-made disaster. The national news states the area affected by the oil-spill could fill Lake Erie six times over. Lets invest in a home-grown clean energy future with future national headlines stating, “The Winds and Waves of Lake Erie Produce Enough Clean Energy to Power the Homes Bordering the Gulf's Shoreline.” Cleveland is becoming a hub of renewable energy innovation and application. Check out www.nPowerPEG.com for future potential of harvesting great lake wave energy. - JPD

Sue

there are no whales in the Great Lakes

wind turbine blades are designed to clear small sailing ships and larger work boats - at least 70 feet of clearance

My guy just got a job installing land-based wind turbines on the Canadian side of Lake Erie - so happy that green tech is creating jobs! He's apprenticing on one of the first cranes manufactured specifically to put up wind turbines. Neat stuff. - Angela West

A small wind turbine can generate 52,000 kWh per year. Multiply that by 5 and it is pretty exciting. It doesn't sound much but the bigger thing here is the fact that they're realizing how using wind power can be very beneficial. - Tom Savage

It's good news for Canada too! A lot of the air pollution and acid rain in Ontario and Ohio is from coal-burning power plants in Ohio. Renewable energy is a win-win for all of us. - Timetrvlr

And moving on to things that actually exist in Lake Erie... :o

I'm excited. This is something I've wanted to see for a while. Lake Erie has decent winds, a very shallow bottom, and essentially no commercial activity that can be disrupted by wind farms. - Boyd Bottorff

@julia: Lake Erie whaling

I think it is a very good idea to ban whaling in Lake Erie. I am surprised that the beasts manage to survive in the lake because of the high levels of pollution in the water.

We should consider if the installation of wind generators will cause them any harm. I suppose the blades will be high enough out of the water that they won't contact the animal in the event that it breeches underneath a wind mill. - Sue

Whales and Co2 connection...

Whale droppings is vital to ocean’s carbon cycle Saving endangered baleen whales could boost the carbon storage capacity of the Southern Ocean, suggests a new study of whale feces. Whale feces once provided huge quantities of iron to a now anaemic Southern Ocean, boosting the growth of carbon-sequestering phytoplankton. Whaling No More
Please join us in taking action in supporting & encouraging anti whaling
nations in phasing out whaling. Banning all forms of whale hunting is true conservation!

There are just a few days left to make our voices heard. Delegates from around the world will be joining to determine the future of the whales. A number of pro whaling nations are seeking to lift the ban and hunt openly, help save the whales !!!
