It turns out that a lot of solar projects that big companies are putting together cost them absolutely no money! Actually, they often save them money from day 1. The question is, how are they doing it...and why can't you and I do it as well?
Solar power makes economic sense right now. If you install solar panels on your house in California, you will save money over the 25-year life of the panel (barring Steorn and cold fusion). But it's hard to ask someone to pay 10 years of power bills all at once. In fact, it's prohibitively expensive. Not even big companies (aside from the extremely high profit ones) have that much money to throw around.
But investment companies do have that money, and if they can guarantee a 100% return over 25 years, then that's a darned good deal for them, especially in light of the current credit crisis in America.
Well that's where MMA Renewable Ventures steps in. These guys link investors with companies who want solar panels. The investors pay for the panels and installation, and then charge the companies a locked rate for the power coming out of the cells. The companies save money on their power for the next 25 years, look green, and don't have to lay out huge sums of money. The investors get a healthy return over the 25-year life of the cells and don't have to worry much about risk.
It's a great deal, and already MMS has brokered deals for Gap, Estee Lauder and several other large companies.
The question is, can the model be scaled down, so that you and I can get our solar panels for free too? Well, so far, it doesn't make economic sense. But several companies are hungrily eyeing that space. And with a little bit cheaper cells, and a couple more government subsidies, we could all be enjoying free solar!

We seem to always be expecting much cheaper solar cells in "just a few years". I'm still waiting.
But it could be that the cells from new places like NanoSolar will actually be much cheaper than current cells - in the case of NanoSolar, I think they use more of a printing process that allows them to produce more cells faster and cheaper. Let's hope we can buy these down at HomeDepot in a year or two at reasonable prices and use them for roof covering material. If they can get the price down somewhere between 5K and 10K to outfit a house (and provide a good chunk of the home's power on sunny days) then we won't need these kinds of programs.

Caution all who are looking at CitizenRe...for a while it looked good, and then it looked like multi-level marketing (a pyrimid scheme) and now I don't know what to think...honestly. But as of now...we're not promoting citizenre on EcoGeek

There is a small scale model of free solar panels for private citizens in Salerno (close to Naples, in Italy).
It works like that:
a partnership between the local administration and the local agency for energy buys the panels and assigns them totally for free to the 1000 top ranking suscribers to the call.
Then this partenrship takes the income just for the exceeding energy coming from the solar roof (the energy that you do not use).
Thanks to a special agreement with italian government this exceeding energy is payed at a very profitable price, so in a something like ten years the partnership gets back the money and begins to gain. Meanwhile the private can benefit saving money by means of solar energy for free, so it seems a real win-win strategy.

My first thought on reading this was something like the microloan programs in Bangladesh and elsewhere. Start a program where people can invest however much they wish, and issue small loans to people for solar, or wind generators if more appropriate. Maybe require the building(s) powered to be made more efficient by a certain percentage, and whatever excess power generated would pay back the loan. If the excess power doesn't pay all the loan payment, the customer pays the rest.

GENIE (Generating Electricity by Nondestructive Interference of Energy) is under development and is likely to begin to power homes in a year or so.
Cars will follow in two or three years. They will never require fuel or a battery recharge. Even better, where utilities cooperate, car owners might sell enough power to the grid, connected without wires when parked, to pay for the vehicle over a reasonable length of time.

A handful of videos that (briefly) appeared on the internet have stimulated a flurry of interest in magnetic motors that may be made to self-run, without any obvious outside source of input energy. At least one of them apparently worked well enough, for the 22 year old inventor to now be cooperating with a potential manufacturer, in order to market his device.
While skeptics abound (and without independent laboratory confirmation, have excellent reason to be skeptical) these experiments may have opened a door to wider appreciation of an extremely important potential for rapidly reducing our dependency on fossil fuels.
Magnetic machines that self-run are not, as is widely believed, perpetual motion machines. They are certainly converting some form of energy.
The most likely candidate is Zero Point Energy, ZPE. But, in spite of that fact, most scientists familiar with the Zero Point Field, believe that conversion of ZPE is unlikely to prove practical. As magnetic conversion technologies move toward the marketplace, a discussion as to the source of the energy is inevitable. It may go on for a very long time.
A recent book that challenges conventional belief: Zero Point Energy - The Fuel of the Future, by Thomas Valone, provides extensive scientific input and can readily be understood by the lay reader.
The first U.S. Patent issued claiming ZPE might be converted and used as a source of energy was inspired by the late Robert Forward, then a physicist at Hughes Aircraft. He had discussed, in a pioneering paper appearing in Physical Review B in 1984, how ZPE might become a source of electricity.
Dr. Frank Mead of the United States Air Force Office of Advanced Concepts and Jack Nachamkin, an Electrical Engineer working with him (who had the idea) were awarded U.S. Patent #5,590,031, in December of 1996. This invention, suggested by Dr. Forward, has not to date proven realistic to construct and test.
Several U.S. Patents have been issued to Dr. Fabrizio Pinto, a physicist, formerly with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (administered by the California Institute of Technology). Dr. Pinto is now CEO of his own firm and is developing breakthrough technology based on ZPE conversion of the Casimir Force. There are medical, computer and energy applications referenced in his Patents. All might lead to practical technology.

One thing some of us do here in Norway (we don't have much sun in the winter though) is buying a single solar panel for our cabin. We then have that panel connected to a battery inside of the cabin, and when we're there, say once a week (less, actually) we've got power enough for a bit of telly in the evenings, even without any sun. I find it all rather cool.
