More Efficient F-150s Planned for 2010  E-mail

Why is it that whenever I come to these auto shows I end up talking about big honking cars becoming marginally more efficient?

Well...one reason is because these are the autos that actually consume the majority of America's gasoline, so it's important to make them more efficient. However, I'm loath to talk about the F-150 being greener, because that certainly doesn't mean it's green. But bringing the diesel platform to America, which has greatly reduced Europe's fuel consumption, is definitely worth getting at least a little bit excited about.

The 2009 model will be a regular gas engine with a 1 mpg increase (mostly due to lighter materials), while 2010 will add "ecoboost" (diesel cycle with gasoline) and diesel versions. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait and see what effect the ecoboost and diesel technology will have on the fuel efficiency.

Note: GM paid for my hotel and travel to the Detroit Auto Show.

I have a 1990 Nissan pickup that gets 25 mpg city and 30 highway. 1990! EIGHTEEN YEARS later, and there still isn't a truck with better gas performance. It's criminal. We should have higher CAFE standards years ago. (Not that I have a problem with keeping my truck on the road and out of the waste stream with proper maintenance and all that. Fine with me. But still!)
