Parking Plugs: How to Keep your PHEV Charged

For people with garages (myself not included) there's a very simple way to charge your plug-in vehicle overnight. Unfortunately, day-time charging is likely to be a much more complicated affair. Even if you can poach one of the few outlets around you'll likely be breaking the law.

But people are already looking to solve this problem. Richard Lowenthal is starting up a company, Coulomb Technologies, to build outlets into parking infrastructure. I imagine, he'd also be looking to generate revenue (somehow) from these outlets. Whether it's an RFID linked billing system, or if you have to drop in a few quarters to get your juice out of the plug, I don't know. But it certainly would be a nice thing for our parking structures to need.

People should be taking a quick look up here in Northern Canada (Alberta). Winters are pretty severe so nearly all of our business (employee) parking has plug-ins. This would be an excellent place to beta test such vehicles with limited range. Plus it would be great to test such green alternatives in the face of big oil here in Alberta(Tar sands).

Somehow it seems to me that some idiots would find it hilarious to cut all those power-cords.
