Yeah...sometimes you just have to share beautiful things. This solar oven is in operation right now, and is used to melt down aluminum. It's called the "physics-sun" and it's in Parkent, Uzbekistan. These gorgeous pictures were taken by Flickr user Pluvialis.

The shadow on the collector tower locates the sun behind the array, therfore the oven would not be operational at this time of day. This is a Hoax (rendered image)

i do not know if images are "enhanced", but the furnace is real - it has been since probably 80's. my father knew people who worked there.

Just to reassure everyone these aren't computer rendered. Some have been cropped, but the images are exactly as taken with a Canon A420. No photoshopping. I'm really, really glad you like them. The noise, light and smell were all phenomenal. I was pretty honoured to see this (visiting with a party of University of Cambridge physicists)

I am interested, though, why some people think these have been computer rendered or faked. It seems a strange thing to spend time doing! Apparently the furnace was used in Soviet times to test ICBM casings and anything that they thought might need to survive nuclear armageddon. It makes a lot of exotic ceramics for industry today. Its an extraordinary place. Massive glass sculptures of the sun inside the lab buildings; huge, glittering entrance halls, filled with mirrors.
