IBM announced it is expanding global efforts of greening up, not necessarily just for the wholesomeness of it, but because it’ll counter the rising energy costs of operation and meet corporate sustainability requirements for clients (meaning more clients for them!) – which is a good enough reason for me.

We wrote over a year ago about Project Big Green, IBM’s commitment to getting new technologies to increase energy efficiency in data centers. See, on the one hand, CIOs want greener tech infrastructures that will meet business requirements, and on the other hand, CFOs want near-instant financial benefits from these investments. So, IBM launched Project Big Green to satisfy these goals, and now they’re committing an additional $1 billion to it.

Already in the last year, IBM has helped cut over 2,000 clients’ energy costs by as much as 40% through better data center hardware, software, and services technologies. Such a huge company can hold some major clout in the green movement, and while we greenies tend to demand More Now, any steps towards greener tech by major corporations are steps that other companies will follow, and thus increase the speed of the green movement’s growth. In conjunction with other companies and through solo efforts, IBM is making doing more than just talk the talk, from improving efficiency of RAM to better, cheaper solar power, from sharing environmental tech patents to showing green is business savvy. Their ongoing commitment is additional proof of Big Blue’s plan to see Project Big Green through.
