Yes let's make these cars too expensive for the average person to buy since it is the average person who needs these cars. Too bad these are just toys for the people with deep pockets. All these years and they still can't build a comparable car with a more reasonable price tag.

Gas is $1k a year for us. For my co-workers though, many pay $3k/year.

This is a great company who are opening all our eyes and showing us what an electric car can be. Yes the car is [initially] expensive, however so is R&D. Tesla would have spent many millions to get the mix just right, so now they need to recoup their investment. This is the same for any company, in any industry. Think Sony and the PlayStation when it was first released, Think of Apple when the iPod was first released, etc. Don't be turned off by the initial product pricing - let the celebs and other wealthy buy it because then the company is getting a return on it's R&D and then it can move to the mass production stage which will make it cheaper for everyone. Now only if they can make a right hand drive version for the international market, especially Australia... ;)

price out a comparable electrical power setup that'd net you a 200 mile one way range. Then make it so it's rechargeable in under 8 hours.
let me know how the frame should be built to handle the battery load, oh and don't forget- you've got to do it within the bodyframe of a sedan, let alone coupe.
Then you're qualified to discuss price of long range EVs that're more than your lifestyle requires but require some adjustment in your thinking about how to go about your daily and weekly goings on,which is too much effort.

so presently, those of us who are not only concerned with oil prices, but also environmentally aware, should eagerly await the popularity of the hybrids...seems like we'll get these first as opposed to the ones made for the top elite ($$$-wise).

Batteries are very expensive. At the moment.

The market acceptance for electrics is low. At the moment.

Tesla has found a niche where they can sell some limited number of electrics at a premium price and cover their R&D (or at least a lot of it).

And they destroy the myth that electrics are no more than glorified golf carts.

BTW, they've announced a sub $30k model to follow the 'S'. Acceptance is rising and battery prices should be falling. Seems to me that Tesla is operating like a very smart company.

Yes the car might initially be more expensive than the average person can afford but you whiny bitches in the comments are missing the point. Someone has to invest in the first place to get these vehicles on the road and after the early adopters have paved the way, the rest of us benefit as economies of scale become possible. Stop the friggin whining about an innovative company that is leading us in the right direction.

As I've understood it, anything that was worth having, was usually just out of reach. In the earlier days having indoor plumbing was considered only for the wealthy, soon followed laundry machines and dryers as well as motor vehicles. All of which most of us can easily find in or around our homes. So it would make some sense to market the initial Tesla Roadster to the wealthy, in order to ensure an enduring market. I look forward to seeing the S whenever Tesla decides to reveal it.

Also, I'd like to point out that Tesla, while having the highest mileage per charge to date, is not the only company planning on releasing EV's (as they are often called) also currently Phoenix Motor Cars intends on releasing a pick-up and SUV EV this fall (with the starting price at around 50-70K) for more information check out http://www.phoenixmotorcars.com

There are more options out there, but also I'd like to make everyone aware, that just because you have an EV, doesn't lessen your impact on the environment if your power is supplied by burning fossil fuels, check with your local Utility supplier as many now offer wind and solar as options for supplying your electricity.

LOL, because there are none to buy. Pretty damn hard to show a demand when there is no supply to start with. Build a good ev with good performance, price and LOOKS and it will be bought. If people are willing to spend 70,000 on a butt ugly SUV they will certainly spend 60,000 on a fast, sporty, good looking, quiet, clean car.

Give the public the chance and market it wisely in pop culture to make it the 'in' thing and it will sell, sell well. If enough demand it shown it will be mass produced and bring the price down to 15,000-30,000.

goss132 is offering the same type of thing. electric car, fits 4 comfortably, and a whole lot less. like within regular peoples price range. can't wait!
