With the lack of understanding of sarcasm that's so prevalent across america, this video could doom us all!

Joke? I don't think it was a joke, like the video said, it is cheap and lives in our mountains, and powers our homes and offices. We should start mining more.

Ridiculous

Wow, this is pretty crazy!
I think it is important for individuals to take more responsibility of our earth. I found a neat website that stops postal junk mail helps the environment at the same time. Check it out: www.simplestop.net
Coal is sunshine in a rock
written by Emil , July 21, 2008
Ecoism is taking on religious undertones, and I find it disconcerting that people are making fun of coal. Coal is the work of God who put the material on the planet for his children to use. It was God who arranged for the sunshine to fall on his creation to make this wonder material. God will tell us when to use something else.
Anthracite based nano-powder makes an excellent automobile fuel which can compete with gasoline in terms of range and power. Why isn't there more knowledge of this? It is because governments of the world are actively suppressing anthracite nano-powder technology in order to prop up the petroleum industry.

I thought the video was too over the top. It's the kind of condescending crap that Americans hate from environmentalists.
I can't decide.....
written by Andrew Pritchard , July 22, 2008
... whether it's a hoax, a joke, or someone is actually being serious. It portrays Americans as ignorant, money grabbing, morons. I hope whoever did make it doesn't get sued by the Department of Energy.

The sarcasm is just too subtle for most people to get...
Fantastic Technology
written by Kroeze , July 22, 2008
Actually the technology is amazing transferring coal into jet fuel and diesel.
The plant in Ohio is designed to produce fuel that costs just $60 to $70 a barrel with 46 percent fewer emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases than conventional diesel fuels. It does not appear to be a myth, but something we need to look further into.
We don't need more cowbell...
written by Running2Ks , July 22, 2008
We need more satire in the world. Of course, the people who need to "get it" won't, but the choir you preach to does. So, ahem, Amen to that! Great work

Dude, the DOE scrapped FutureGen's "clean coal" plans were in January 2008. That project's going nowhere fast. Tell you what, you can have a "clean coal" plant when you relocate your home to a spot downhill from a slurry pond.

Cheap? - relatively so... IF you don't count the environmental costs of mining and burning it.
Abundant? - Yes if you don't mind destroying large areas of land with strip mining ans polluting the ground water. Clean? - NOT. Even if we develop a clean way to burn it, we're still faced with the unacceptable consequences of mining it.

written by rc , July 22, 2008
Wat are the "unacceptable consequences of mining" exactly?
Coal is the work of gods
written by Labatt Fartoui , July 22, 2008
Oh the gods, creator of coal and lovers of women. We shall not use coal for fuel but wait until it all turns to diamond and we will be as rich as private equity bandits.
Strip Mining
written by RayOfHope , July 22, 2008
If you're unaware of what strip mining or mountain top removal does to the land, I suggest you google the term and look and learn. There are many eloquent descriptions and photos of what the practice does. I believe that you, like me, will find then unacceptable.
too subtle?
written by james , July 22, 2008
This video is not too subtle, is is too juvenile. It exemplifies the term Sophomoric.
You know, there's been too much of that on Ecogeek lately. Or am I only just noticing it? And why, why, why! can't your writers be bothered with editing?!? You make yourselves look ignorant, uneducated, and you discredit your articles. All this, despite bring valuable and interesting content (at least some of the time) to the web. I'm done ranting now...
Coal is just a hyrocarbon..
written by CB , July 23, 2008
Coal is just another hydrocarbon, you know one of the easiest ways to store chemical energy. When you need energy on demand you have to have it stored somewhere. The problem in the US is balance. We use more energy than we store, and this can't last forever. Once coal is priced as a scarce good a lot of coal power plants are going to go out of business.
The Gov't PAID for that?

Science, technology gadgets and...baby seals. We're in a bit of an eco-mess, but we've got the brains to lick any problem. And that's why EcoGeek.org publishes up to ten stories daily about innovations that are saving the planet.
And if that sounds interesting to you, then congratulations, you're an EcoGeek.
