Elektrobay EV Charging Stations Are Up in London  E-mail

For £100 a year, EV drivers can charge up at any of the nine new charging stations going up in a handful of London boroughs, adding to the growing number of recharge points in the city. Called Elektrobays (the "k" makes it edgy, see), the stations went live yesterday, and EV users can now register to use them. So, as the availability of all-electric car choices increases in the next two years, so to will the ability to charge them, and Londoners will be off and running with quiet, tiny cars zooming through the streets.

As we’ve talked about pretty often on EcoGeek, EV charging infrastructures are rapidly growing in big cities around the world, including here in the US, underscoring the idea that EVs are the future of cars. Now the issue will be getting the electricity provided to come from all renewable resources – like solar panels placed on charging poles – as well as putting smart grids in place. Though existing grids can typically handle folks plugging in their EVs, smart grids will be increasingly necessary as consumer purchases of EVs tick upwards along with electricity needs for charging. Luckily, car makers and utility companies already know this. So, auto makers, we're ready when you are!

Looks great. They've even figured out how to prevent someone from using another's power session in the system. Next up is getting a lockable charging cap over the plug on the car.

I own a 2004 Prius now with 66K miles on it.

I'll try my damnedest to hold onto this car until there is a reasonable plug in to replace it. I prefer the Prius plug in, but I hear the Insight might be back. And then there is the Volt.

Whoever is first gets my business.
