Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced yesterday the city's plan to use solar power for 10 percent of its energy needs by 2020, the world's largest solar plan.
The city will need to generate 1,280 MW of solar power to meet that goal. The plan outlines the use of both public and private facilities for power generation and will cost LA residents $2 a month. About 500 MW will come from facilities in the Mojave Desert with the rest being made up from smaller programs and home solar installations.
For a city where solar power currently fulfills less than one percent of its energy needs, this project will be a large undertaking, but it they're successful, LA could be a great model for similar plans around the country. I hope that they will ultimately supplement solar power with other renewable energy sources to make up the rest of their power needs.

At first glance, it would seem as if such an idea could be better realized as an investment over the long term with an immediate impact. Of course a study may need to be conducted to confirm or deny that.
