Because, apparently, stairs are too easy, some Estonian designers have
proposed these human-powered elevators. It looks like a heck of a lot
of fun, probably considerably more fun than stairs, and requires
absolutely no electricity. However, it doesn't look cheaper, easier or
safer than stairs, so they probably won't be widely implemented.
It's an interesting rethinking of the elevator nonetheless, and I love the accompanying drawing. And the innovation itself might be enough for it to be implemented in interesting architectural spaces like outdoor gardens or art museums.

What if you set up a cable / pulley system to move it vertically, instead? It would still be hard work, but you could fit it into a normal sized elevator shaft.

Since people are complaining about being overweight (not me), this would be a great idea. It sounds like it works like a yo-yo. A person wouldn't be able to wear heels in a contraption like this. That would be better for one's health also. Oh, what sweet torture.

I'm not much of an engineer, but it seems it should be possible to build a 1-2 person elevator using gears and chain that can be operated by hand turning a crank. I would be very interested in building something like this in my house to help my crummy-kneed partner upstairs. Know of any resources or plans?
