"Ahem! Could You Please Unplug Me!"

plugCell phones may soon begin giving energy-saving instructions to their owners. It's not an entirely new idea, but a mobile industry task force led by Nokia is thinking about it more seriously than we thought they would.

The taskforce is working on decreasing the environmental impact of the mobile technology industry.  Though, in terms of power use, they're already quite slim, simply unplugging all cell chargers while they aren't in use could save as much energy as is used by 60,000 average European residences.

To combat the problem, the taskforce is considering having cell phone's announce "Please unplug the charger," when the phone finishes charging. I'm not a huge fan of electronics that talk back, but I'm also not a fan of wasting wasted energy. Nokia says that the alerts will be in place on their phones by 2007.

Not the best idea!
written by Rob, September 27, 2006
I'm very keen on unplugging unused appliances, but rather than having a gimmicky voice telling you to unplug it. Surely it would be simpler to devise a switch that tripped and disconnected the charger, if the transformer hadn't been under load, for say, five minutes. The user would then have to physically press a button, next time they wished to use the charger.

A Ton Of Sense
written by Hank, September 27, 2006
I'm no electrical engineer, but if this is possible, then I entirely agree that this is a better way to do things. I hate it when my appliances talk to me. Even the "Hello" message when I turn on my stereo annoys me.

Use a power strip...
written by bottleman, September 30, 2006
This issue has been bugging me for years. It is SO ludicrous that every gadget has its charger which seems to dumbly draw power from the wall 24 hours a day. We've sent a man to the moon -- why can't we make chargers that turn off?

In the meantime my home solution is I have a power strip that most of my gadgets plug in to. When I'm not charging the cell phone/mp3 player/etc/etc I just flip the power switch on the strip to off. Easy and no need to unplug.

Not all cell phone adapters are energy h
written by Tom Konrad, October 01, 2006
I have a "Kill-a-Watt" appliance tester, which you can use to see how much power an appliance is actually using. I just tested my cell phone charger (Sony Ericsson CST-13) with the phone unplugged for 25 hours, and it used less than 0.005 kWh (The readout, which measures 1/100ths of a kWh was still at 0.00.)
Rather than designing new chargers that tell you to unplug them, it seems to be that a better solution would be to mandate that all chargers be manufactured like this one, so that they only use minscule amounts of electricity when the phone is unplugged. That way we can save our effort for more useful energy saving measures.

Solar on my cell-u-lar
written by Richard in FLA, June 11, 2007
Why not put a solar cell on the back of cell phones? My calculator that cost $4.00 has one! THen we wouldn't have to worry about unplugging my cell phone charger! If there's worry about not enough space, make the solar panel flip open! Come on guys, it's not rocket science!

Makes no sense
written by Ftoddt77, July 23, 2007
It makes absolutely no sense that cell phone chargers that are not charging a phone use any power whatsoever.
There is no circuit and therefore no amp flow which is required as part of the volts X amps equals watts(power) formula. The heat generated to a non charging cell phone charger, if it is similar to any transformer would be the heating of the core iron with the wrapped windings around it. Basically it would be extending your recepticle wires out into you room.
I don't see the problem

Transformers always use electricity when
written by Jason, August 01, 2007
Because transformers rely on the principle of inductance, which means that there are actually two seperate circuits, one which plugs in to the wall, and generates a magnetic/electric field which causes current to flow in the other circuit with a lower voltage. When you unplug the phone the wall circuit still uses current limited by it's internal resistance and backdflow current.

Having the charger tell you to unplug it is a stupid idea. because it would be smarter as stated by someone else, to have the charger turn itself off until it was unplugged and plugged in again. I charge my phone overnight, and waking up to "Please unplug me! Please unplug me!" would drive me nuts.

...
written by Kyllein, August 13, 2007
Actually, it's simple to do: Just put a switching transistor in series with the charge plug. When the phone is charging, it's open and allowing the transformer to make power for the phone. When the phone is disconnected, the circut opens and the transistor cuts power to the transfformer. Nothing else needs be done.

Very simple solutions
written by Rob Bell, August 20, 2007
I agree completely with this subject.
The industry at large needs to take steps to a/. tell their customers that they need to unplug their chargers when not in use and b/. develop chargers that simply don't waste electricity.
At unpluggit.co.uk there is a petition to sign that I will be taking to the mobile phone industry to show the level of support for such actions from mobile phone companies, both service providers and phone manufacturers. Sign up today. Thanks, Rob.

Missing Information
written by Gary Nelson, September 23, 2007
I went through various websites trying to get an answer as to why cell phone chargers use electricty when not in use. The people who have commented on the artical were more enlightening then most of the other blogs and websites I encountered. The most frustrating thing about the information available on most of the sites is how incomplete the statistical information was. For instance, the statement made that if ten percent of the worlds cell phone users unplugged their chargers when they were not using them, then it would save enough power to run 60000 european homes. You are clearly missing some important peices of information here. How many people does ten percent of the worlds cell phone users equal? How long does ten percent have to unplug before it would come up with enough power to power 60000 european homes? How long would this power actually last? Please dont throw these statistics out there like the sheep that exist in the masses will simply bow to your clearly superior intellect. Its like watching a Michael Moore movie. No information, just the most obvious rhetoric available by the environmental mainstream. Thanks for nothing.

think about it a bit more
written by mat, September 24, 2007
What Jason says about coil losses is true of linear power supplies, yes. However, most mobile phone chargers these days are switched mode power supplies, which means they don't have coils (and there for reactance losses like heat). A switched-mode power supply 'shuts down' when not in use, merely drawing enough electricity to keep a tiny capacitor topped up. So almost too small a current to measure.

Much, much better to worry about using energy saving lights, turning off TVs or amplifiers, taking the bus, not buying food flown halfway across the world, etc. etc.. I actually fart, every day, more damage to the environment than my mobile charger being plugged in does.

Let's be generous, and say my phone charger draws 0.1W when not in use (it's less, but my gear won't measure that low). The average Brit's energy requirement is 5KW (including non-electricity energy like driving and so on, figure from govnt stats), which means just to offset MY PERSONAL energy use, 50,000 chargers need unplugging, 24 hours a day. To offset power requirements of 60,000 Brits, some 3 billion chargers need unplugging. Now imagine each of those 3 billion people replaced ONE incandescent light bulb with a flourescent. That one bulb saves (say) 50W each. That gives us 1.5 Terawatts saved. THAT'S TEN POWER STATIONS. Priorities, people. If you're getting 3 billion people to do one thing, let's get them to do one thing that makes a big difference.

Of course, there aren't even 3 billion mobile phones in use. I doubt that many people even have access to electricity, let alone mobile phones. A BBC article suggested there may be 1 billion mobile phones in use worldwide. I don't have numbers to back this up, but I'll bet there are 3 billion incandescent light bulbs in London alone.

Someone should figure out (showing their working, as the comment above this says) whether the energy cost of making a 'talking' power supply is more or less than the energy cost of sticking with what we have and keeping that voltage capacitor full. My money would be on making new power supplies (cost of design, development, factory retooling, parts, extra shipping due to increased weight/size, etc) being considerably more energy hungry than otherwise.

It is possible
written by Eco-Warrior, October 29, 2007
There is a product on the market available that when a charger has finished its charge it completely stops leaving anough residual charge to power a small green led to let the user know that the charge is completed. To begin a new session of recharging all one has to do is plug the item in and it automatically starts again, as if it were being plugged into the wall.

All those chargers, still plugged in, fo
written by linuxiac, November 03, 2007
All those chargers, still plugged in, for the phones used by Al Quida! You know, the ones used and tossed away after one use so as not to be traced nor targeted, plus ones used to set off IEDs and remote suicide belts on young children!

Imagine if every one of the chargers were unplugged after their 'final' use! This has got to have the Pentagon up at night, seeking solutions!!!

But, most are NOT transformer inductive "parasitic" loads on the power grid, but, instead are switching power supplies, that use miniscule energy to keep the capacitor charged.

Let's get everyone to fully inflate those tires, replace incandescent lighting with modern flourescent bulbs, and turn off the lights and fans in empty rooms!

This is stupid. Look at real data.
written by Charles, February 03, 2008
The numbers that Tom Conrad posted are consistent with other ACTUAL tests Ive heard. The amount of power is so small, that this thread has probably consumed more energy than every cell phone charger east of the Mississippi in the USA combined. Walk to work ONE day and you have saved more than energy than a lifetime of you and 12 of your friends unplugging chargers. Tree huggers need to get a life.

Much more energy would be saved, if Phone makes didn't have to make different chargers, with different plugs on, every time they made a new model of a phone.

phones get lost, broken, stolen, replaced with new models. I have a box full of old phone charges, that are still in working condition.

All this crap about chargers using so much power pisses me off. It's like saying computer cases use too much metal, so we should make USB plugs out of plastic. It's insignificant.

These black bricks really do eat into yo
written by Robin, November 08, 2008
For the few posters above who weren't just spamming: these 'big bad black brick' chargers and power supplies for small devices really do waste a lot of power. You might not think a 5-watt power supply is going to make a dent but if you multiply that 5 watts by 3-10 such devices in each home, by 24 hours by 365 days by 100 million households (in the US for example) it does add up (in this example, to between 13 and 44 billion kilowatt hours, which is the equivalent of burning between half a million and 1.7 million tons of coal.

And don't forget there's more than one of these in most houses. Cell phone chargers, wireless routers, modems, PC speakers, cordless telephones, answering machines, and countless other devices use them.

written by Jules, December 09, 2008
I have a power strip that all my PC, stereo, TV, DVD etc plugs into and a switch on top of the TV (next to the door) so when i leave the room i can easily turn everything off completely. Alternatively, I have rebuilt a phone charger with a relay and current sensing so when I want to charge my phone, I plug it in and press a reset button to reset the relay contacts. When the phone is fully charged or when i unplug it the relay contacts open and disconnect the mains. The current sense circuit only draws current when the phone is charging and only 5mA then anyway.

not so easy...
written by Aly, December 15, 2008
I charge my phone on my bedside table (so I don't forget it). So my charger is between my bed and my wall- very tight space. To unplug my charger, I would have to take everything off my bedside table, lift it out of the way. That lets me scoot my bed a little. Then I have to squeeze under my bed and reach it from there... It's also really dusty under my bed...

Is really worth it for the ONE cell phone charger I use? (Most things I have charge from my computer.)

I also think this blog does more for the 'cause' than the message would. Do you really think about it every time your dvd player says "Hello" when it turns on? Its very likley that people would ignore the message... Not worth the effort of reprograming the phones. Why not simply add an off switch to the charger? Just make sure it's on the plug that goes into the phone... Of course, I think it's a cooler idea to build solar powered phones... Obviously that has some issues- for example, it can't charge at night.
