Scotland Yard has announced that in four years half of its fleet will be made up of electric or air-powered vehicles.
The London police already have about 140 Toyota Priuses in use and a few all-electric smart fortwos. The stations using the smart fortwos have electric charging stations on the premises. The service hasn't said what air-powered vehicles are being considered.
Electric and alternative-powered cars are ideal for a downtown police force. Having a limited range isn't really a worry within an urban area and if stations throughout the city are equipped with charging stations, that eliminates any issue of a power source altogether. Also, all the stopping and starting and slower speeds involved with downtown driving make hybrid and electric cars a perfect fit. This transition could make a huge difference in the environmental impact of a police force, which relies on constantly mobility.
