| Frybrid: More than Just Fun to Say |

Today EcoGeek put on a pair of pants that no longer fits. We're realizing that the days of metabolic bliss when we could run on greasy foods alone may have come and gone. This is why we were quite excited to read about Frybrid, a Seattle-based company that's converting diesel vehicles to run partially on waste vegetable oil. Dee-lish. We ecogeeks have all heard about such things, but what's cool about Frybrid is that they sell kits to convert your own diesel vehicle to run on french fry remains. French fry droppings. Whatever. The FAQ is surprisingly straight and informative, with nuggets (mm, nuggets) like this one: How do emissions compare? This is a surprisingly difficult question to answer. What is clear is that Sulfur Oxides are reduced 100% and that burning SVO only releases the amount of Carbon that is absorbed from the atmosphere by the crop that produced the oil, in other words SVO is Carbon neutral. As far as other emissions, there simply has not been definitive research yet. In applicable studies, some show CO, CO2, NOx, and HC are higher, some show lower, some a mixture. It is my hypothesis that in a properly designed system, CO and CO2 should be about the same as petrodiesel, HC should be a bit less, and NOx a bit higher. And Just to decrypt all that: via WorldChanging.

Carbon Neutral?
written by Doug , March 19, 2007
I don't believe it is right to declare SVO 'Carbon Neutral'. Afterall, oil could also be classified that way as it is nothing more than the decomposition of plant/animal life over a few million years. Burning it just re-deploys the Carbon those plants and animals stored long ago. SVO just shortens that time span.
By a few hundred million years
written by Hank , March 19, 2007
If the timespan is shortened to one year then, yes, we should consider it carbon neutral. That's the whole reason behind the push for ethanol and biodiesel (besides the whole 'dependence on foreign oil' thing.
Unfortunately, SVO, ethanol and biodiesel all take a lot of energy to create, in the form of farm machinery, shipping and hydrocarbon based pesticides. Using waste oil, however, can obviate those issues as well, since the oil was grown not specifically for fuel, and is going to be disposed of anyway.

SVO is a great way to go
written by paul , March 20, 2007
I bought a car to run on SVO last year and saved myself a lot of money, as well as made the environment cleaner.
I use WVO (Waste Vegetable Oil) from local business. As Hank points out, it's a waste product that normally would go to a rendering plant anyway. As for being renewable, Oil for biodiesel can also be produced from algae. The benefit of this is that it doesn't put a pressure on farm land. Algae-oil can be produced in farms in areas where land cannot be used for farming (i.e. the desert areas where warm temperature helps algae thrive). Existing Coal plants can also use algae to consume 40% of the carbon dioxide and 86% of NO. see link here: Green algae to the rescue. The algae can then be used to make biodiesel.
Go SVO!

This is a great idea! As it stands, converting French fry oil from local restaurants into biodiesel is an enormous, time-consuming, hugely demanding task. I'm all in flavor of making it easier, and will give thanks every time I'm driving behind one of these vehicles and inhaling Eau De French Fry exhaust instead of toxic chemicals.

send me the details whether there is any quality kit which can be used to test the quality of edible oil (like litmus paper for knowing the acidity of foods) apart from chemical test done in laboratary
