Hand saws are inefficient and can be difficult to use in certain situations. The only alternative, unfortunately, is an overly-complex, two-stroke engine linked to a sharp chain that will set you back a couple hundred bucks, rarely be used, spew out clouds of burnt oil, and likely endanger your pets and children.So why not mix the usefulness of the chain with the efficiency of muscle-power! Well, a small company called Green Mountain Products is selling just such a device. Unfortunately I can't figure out where to buy them...it looks like Green Mountain Products is only selling wholesale. This isn't going to be the fastest way to cut down a tree, and I would be a little bit afraid of cutting a falling limb from directly below, but there's almost certainly no better option for emissions-free tree trimming.

You can also get it at Sears. At least I bought one just like this a few years ago there. Works great for limbs that are out of reach but under about 25'.

This is a good idea. However, I don't feel its very safe to stand under the limb you are cutting off, as the man in the top right picture is doing. Maybe this should be used after the limb is removed from the tree since that is when the majority of the cutting will be done.

I would suggest a ladder above the target limb, that way your not in the danger zone.

I have been using this saw for two years and just ordered another. I have added rope to the saw and cut as high as 100' by using a casting rod with 90# test line and teardrop sinker and casing over limbs. I then fasten the saw rope to the line when removing sinker so as to pull saw rope over limbs.

I was using my handy manual chain saw to saw a branch (I used a slingshot a weight and a casting rod to get my saw over the branc). The problem is this: I started sawing, then the rope broke. No problem getting the saw out, just pulled it through the cut. I repaired the rope and got the saw back over the branch. Before I knew what happened, the saw was back into the old cut (50% through a 6 inch branch). The problem is that the teeth are facing the wrong way and the rope prevents the saw from being drawn back through so I can flip it. I wish there were teeth on both sides of the saw. I am now reduced to trying to wear through the brach with friction and hoping the rope will eventually break again so I can draw the blade back through the cut. Any ideas on getting my saw back down?

Didnt know they made these...for years all I have done is to take a chainsaw chain, two lengths of rope, fishing line with a weight to pull up the rope. Best done with two men and adjustable handles (broomstick)....Safe? maybe, maybe not..Darwin will always get his cut...The biggest reason for binding is the weight of tree pinches chain...use another rope to pull cut apart...I have cut branches greater than 12" doing it that way. Obviously I am still alive to tell about it...

The chainsaw blabe is great for backpacking. while you are walking along just wip this out, wrap it around the tree, and saw. It weigh nothing in comparison to any power cutter and workes better, too. I only used a real chainsaw blade and used a T-grip: no rope.
