California Senate Votes to Ban Styrofoam Containers

The California state legislature has voted to ban polystyrene foam (aka Styrofoam) take out containers.  Restaurants and other vendors will no longer be able to package food or drink in the material starting January 1, 2014.

Polystyrene can take thousands of years to biodegrade in landfills and, in California, it constantly makes its way into storm drains that empty into the ocean and is the second most common type of beach litter.  Basically, it's become an environmental scourge and California is hoping to do away with it.

Fifty jurisdictions in the state have already passed local bans and it's likely that a full house vote in August will make the ban statewide.  With plenty of alternatives available, including compostable containers, businesses should have no problem complying.

I think we need 1. to ban the use of styrofoam containers, but at the same time find something other than cardboard as a replacement. Cardboard requires wood and cutting down trees is not the solution. Too many people don't or couldn't be bothered with recycling their cardboard and other paper products.

It's about time! That stuff is nasty and never goes away. It also tastes awful. I don't know why we tolerated that nasty stuff in the first place.

No Styrofoam

Are the people in California better than the rest of us living in the USA? No they are not. So, why are they always ahead, why are they the onlyones that will bann styrofoam? Because they CARE. There are alternatives to styrofoam, like "Bagasse" (sugar cane dreggs). Visit www.EcoOrchards.com and learn what we are doing to fight styrofoam, I know you will like what you see.

My wife and I have begun being more intentional about planning when we eat outside of our home so that we don't ever need take-out containers at all. It's sort of like bringing re-usable bags to the grocery store/farmers market/co-op - you just get into the habit and all of the sudden you produce significantly less waste without negatively impacting your quality of life. This is a great step, but we have a way to go yet.
